Mozambique Part 2 – Pão – Portuguese Bread…..

For our time in Mozambique we stayed in a small place on the beach about an hour north of Xai-Xai. The beach was about 40 minutes from the main road and the small town of Chissibuca. One of the reasons to head back to the main road, across a rather watery bridge and some seriously sandy roads was to get supplies every few days.
Mozambique was occupied by the Portuguese from the early 1500’s and most the food you come across is largely of Portuguese origin. The staple on offer all over is the Pão-zinho, or Portuguese bread rolls.
Each village has a bakery or “Padaria”; this one in the Chissibuca was run by this very charming lady and her two assistants. The bread was baked daily and did not disappoint!!
Sadly I have no photos of the actual breads as they seemed to disappear faster than we could buy them! But if you click here there is a recipe for the bread rolls and here for another one….
These photos are stunning! I would love to travel more in Africa, but Morocco feels so landlocked… Algeria to one side, desert and sea on the others. I thought South Africa was absolutely gorgeous! It was a dream come true to go on a safari!
Hi
Was so nice to see these photo’s and your comments. We have a house at (I’m almost sure) the spot where you were. It is next to Canda Laguna and called Paradise Palms. Our place overlooks Lake Canda.
It is such a special place and the locals are such wonderful people. Can’t wait to visit again in December.
Thanks for the Pau recipe, will try it this weekend! If you ever drive through Xai Xai you must visit the bakery they have the most incredible custard and coconut tarts! To die for.
Kind Regards
