Romeria de Coin…

Last Saturday we were driving down towards Malaga which requires a drive through the town of Coin. As it happened we missed our turning and before we knew it we were slap bang in the midst of a parade of sorts. Turns out it was the annual Romeria. We had no option but to pull over and watch the procession pass by and it was a detour well worth making!!

RomerĂa means Pilgrimage and is traditionally held outside the towns and villages throughout Spain. It starts early in the morning with a parade of horse riders, horse and tractor drawn wagons and people walking in traditional costumes. All the wagons have their own music and refreshments.

The parade can last all day if there are many people in it; they eventually arrive at a venue where the event turns in to a fiesta that lasts all night.

It was a good few hours before the road had cleared sufficiently and we could turn around and continue our journey. Well worth the wait!!!
