One of the little villages nearby where we were staying was the very picteresque little village called Casarabonela. It is situated in the Guadalhorce Valley, surrounded by olive groves and farmlands and on the perimeter of the Sierre da Les Nieves National Park. It has a population of fewer than 3,000 people and the layout of the town is a reflection of both the Moorish and Spanish past of the area. The area has wonderful walks and features amongst other sites an ancient Roman Way that was used to transport both animals and agricultural crops.

The main feature of the town is the Santiago Apostle Church, built on the site of a 15th century mosque. The village has endless narrow walkways and little fountains where you can stop and have a drink of the ice cold mountain water. The views down the valley are stunning and it is the kind of place you sort of think….Wow, I would love to live here!!

We had lunch at a small restaurant on the Plaza de Buenavista. Amongst other things we had some delicious salami type Iberica Salchichon and a soup called “Soupa de Puchero”. This is the stock from the meats of a typical stew. It was serve with bread and mint and chickpeas. Delicious and light.
