A little bit of home…..

Rabat hosts an annual music festival called the  “Festival Mawazine,  Rhythmes du Monde”.

The rundown for this year has been:

9 days

9 venues

100 concerts

5 continents

40 countries

There are stages erected around the city and nightly performances. And the best part is that most of the concerts are free!! The artists include, amongst the very long list of others…..Kylie Minogue, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder and a host of others from countries ranging from India, Jordan, France, Jamaica, Ireland and Ivory Coast.

Last year when we first arrived I remember vaguely seeing stages around town but had no idea back then what it was all about. This year, being far more streetwise, we very much looked forward to it. So this year we were of course beyond excited to see a performer from our very own …….

……. Afrique du Sud………………..Johnny Clegg!!!!!

So we packed up the kids, took along our chairs and went and set ourselves up with some friends, on the banks of the Bouregreg River, with the wonderful Kasbah Oudayas in the background and had an evening of great fun!! Judging by the crowds and the amount of dancing going on, I think the Moroccans certainly like South African music!!!

Oh wow! How funny is that! He’s always been wildly popular in French speaking countries for some reason – Le Zulu Blanc! We saw him in concert in London on his 50th birthday and he was still doing his spectacular kicks (although he did joke that the Voltaren had kicked in by then!)

That’s an incredible shot of the port. And belated happy birthday for the 19th by the way!

Yep, he is getting on a bit but did manage a little kick or two!!! I was quite surprised at how good his French was!! And you are right, most of the Moroccans who lived in France that I spoke to knew exactly who he was, Le Zulu Blanc !! Thanks for the comments:)
